玄武 - The Transformational Scientist - Ep3 - Video Blogging Is Not Easy

My name is Jamar Everett Whaley. I am a minority Goldwater and NSF Graduate research Fellowship winner, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Golden Key Honor Society. I am a published author in the field of heroin addiction research and received a Fulbright grant to study Internet Addiction in Beijing, China in 2013.

I am currently a struggling full time student, studying Mandarin in Taipei, Taiwan. Struggling to regain my footing after recovering from thyroid cancer in 2013, I am looking for assistance to help me continue studying into the Fall 2016 semester.

Successfully completing my fundraising goal will allow me to:

• Fulfil the government requirement of a studying for a year before being able to apply for a student work visa.

• Create a website to assist and showcase other minorities interested in studying Mandarin abroad.

• Focus on studying to pass the difficult TOCFL language proficiency test in May 2016.

In order to reach these goals, I have recently entered a competition where I will be rewarded for obtaining 30 hours of one-on-one language study before March. It is my hope that my life’s story and current mission are enough to convince at least 150 people to donate a dollar per successfully completed hour of one on one study (my personal goal is to reach 40 hours per study).

After meeting Michelle Obama while in Beijing, she held my hand and shared she believes my life’s story of overcoming fear, cancer, and poverty to study Mandarin and help others is inspirational. Her belief in me has encouraged me to continue struggling through studying Mandarin as it is the first step in my ultimate goal of 1. Continuing cross-cultural internet addiction research and 2. Improving the inclusion of minority and poor students in study abroad programs (5% Black, 7% Hispanic in 2010).
